Artificial intelligence: How AI optimizes processes in the construction industry

Autor: Dierck

ChatGPT demonstrates what is possible with AI. AI makes use of a variety of data sets to write entire technical articles, design websites, generate program codes, write recipes, or reformulate complex relationships, among other things. In everyday life, we are already noticing the benefits of the AI-based chatbot through these examples.

But what about other industries? What is the current status in the construction industry, where companies are often still in the early stages of digitization? To what extent is AI already being used to automate processes and work steps? Dr. Dierck Segelke, Head of Data and Innovation at syniotec explains how AI can revolutionize the construction industry.

“ChatGPT is already demonstrating the immense potential AI has.”, says Dr. Segelke.

“What ChatGPT makes possible in another field of AI, I believe will soon also be possible in the construction industry. Because of this there is a wide range of areas that can benefit from it – we took notice of this at syniotec through the close exchange with companies and are already in the development of various projects.”

The basics of AI: How artificial intelligence works

AI stands for artificial intelligence. This means that a program is capable of recognizing patterns through a large amount of data, interpreting them and learning independently. Examples from everyday life, besides ChatGPT, would be Google Translate, Apple’s Siri or product recommendations on Amazon.

“For any artificial intelligence, one thing is a prerequisite: data,” says Dr. Segelke. “A central database with as much data as possible is the basis for a well-functioning AI.”

AI in the construction industry

Due to the fact that an ever-increasing amount of data is available today, AI is already being used in a wide variety of areas. With regard to the construction industry, for example, this is already being used to some extent in the following areas:

  • Architecture and planning: development of new designs
  • Building materials manufacturing: optimizing production
  • Building management: Automatically control building technology
  • Construction companies: Use of drones and autonomous machines

Data quality as a decisive factor

“In addition to the amount of data, however, it is equally important that the data is prepared appropriately. In the construction industry, this is unfortunately a key problem. Many have ask us: Why don’t you just use the information from the machine’s CAN bus? In our daily experience, we find that the information is often incomplete and therefore cannot be used. We have therefore decided to develop our own solutions. This way, we are able to ensure that we have an appropriate quality standard in the data and that it is correctly processed,” says Dr. Segelke.

Increased efficiency through AI-based products

In the construction industry, there are large amounts of data and also a lot of historical data. The big problem, however, is the lack of connection between data sets and sources. This area must advance so that it can be used to generate AI-based products that ultimately serve to increase efficiency. “Because of this fundamental problem, our approach at syniotec is to take the first step of identifying small AI use cases that deliver as much value as possible,” says Dr. Segelke. “This allows us to start generating data and ensure extremely accurate evaluations.”

Revolutionizing the construction industry step by step with artificial intelligence

Our goal at syniotec is to develop solutions very quickly that deliver direct added value. Every employee on the construction site should have their work made easier – whether that’s by avoiding paperwork or by automating processes and thus saving time.
