ZÜRCHER BAU: How a railway construction specialist is digitizing its entire fleet

ZÜRCHER BAU GmbH from Meißenheim has been active in track construction since 1956 and has developed into a versatile construction company over the decades. In addition to track construction, its range of services today also includes civil engineering, engineering construction, recycling & logistics and machine technology. With several branches and its own recycling plant, ZÜRCHER BAU ensures that projects are implemented efficiently throughout Germany.

The challenges

Before the introduction of SAM, the overview of the fleet was limited: Machines and attachments were organized by Excel and telephone, and the location of individual devices was often unclear. This made scheduling and construction site logistics complex and time-consuming.

Added to this were the special requirements of track construction: shift work, round-the-clock operations and changing locations. Traditional software solutions were unable to adequately map these complex scenarios. Communication between the construction site and scheduling also had to become simpler and more digital so that requirements could be reported and prioritized more quickly.

The solution with syniotec

With SAM and the telematics solutions syniotec, ZÜRCHER BAU now has a central platform that combines all machine and equipment data. More than 700 devices – from large road-rail excavators to wheel loaders and small devices – are digitally recorded and can be found at any time. Transports and deployment planning are carried out directly in the system, allowing the scheduling department to control its processes much more efficiently.

ZÜRCHER BAU uses various trackers for tracking purposes: Bluetooth tracker (DOT) for small devices and attachments, wired telematics boxes (VOLT, LINK) for machines with their own power supply and solar trackers for containers without a power connection. This variety means that all types of devices can be reliably located and monitored.

In addition, a mobile appliance database was developed at the request of ZÜRCHER BAU so that appliance data can be called up at any time, even when on the move.

The result

The introduction of SAM and the telematics solutions from syniotec has brought significant improvements at ZÜRCHER BAU. Scheduling now works digitally, quickly and with a complete overview of all devices.

The most important results at a glance

  • Transparent capacity utilization: Machine locations and operating statuses can be viewed in SAM at any time, enabling better planning and utilization of the fleet.

  • Mobile appliance database: At Zürcher Bau’s request, a mobile app was developed that can be used to call up appliance data directly on site or on the move.

  • Complete overview: More than 700 devices – from road-rail excavators to chain slings – are digitally recorded and can be found at any time.

  • Simple tracker integration: From Bluetooth-trackers to the solar tracker for containers, all device types are reliably connected.

ZÜRCHER BAU shows what digitalization can look like in construction practice: fast, practical and with real added value. Thanks to the team’s feedback, new solutions such as the mobile device database or special mini trackers for small devices were developed – innovations that are now also benefiting other syniotec customers. Zürcher Bau proves it: Those who live digitalization not only have their machines in view, but also have the future under control.
