Managing construction equipment fleets has become a crucial prerequisite for increasing the profitability of construction companies. The transparency and visibility of all construction machinery and equipment as well as their current status play a key role in increasing efficiency and avoiding downtime.

Nowadays, most manufacturers of construction machinery equip their equipment with telematics solutions to transmit machine data such as GPS position, fuel consumption and many other operating parameters. In the past, this data was not presented uniformly from manufacturer to manufacturer. For example, the weight was given in tons for manufacturer A and in kilograms for manufacturer B. Access to the data required the use of the specific OEM websites and portals.

In a mixed fleet of construction machinery from different manufacturers, it is often a major challenge to merge the data in such a way that a uniform and clear overview is created. A company would have to enter into a special agreement with each manufacturer that provides machines in order to obtain the data. In addition, an independent provider would be required to develop software to manage mixed construction equipment fleets in order to collect and operationally utilize this OEM data.

Clarity in the complex world of machine data

AEMP stands for the “Association of Equipment Management Professionals”. This association recognized the challenge and introduced an OEM telematics standard, now known as AEMP 2.0 (or ISO 15143-3).

In our two software solutions, SAM for construction companies and RAM for rental companies, we use this standard and thus make the equipment data available in a uniform and clear manner.

What use is the AEMP standard to the end user?

In simple terms, the AEMP standard creates a common data format that enables mixed fleet data to be retrieved in a single portal or third-party software. The standard includes more than 20 parameters, such as serial number, GPS location, operating hours, fuel consumption, vehicle identification, location, operating hours or mileage, fuel level and much more information.

Is the AEMP 2.0 system error-free?

Despite the current standardization, retrieving machine data often poses a number of challenges. First and foremost, it can be costly, especially when data is retrieved from multiple manufacturers in a mixed fleet. In addition, some manufacturers either provide data that does not comply with the AEMP 2.0 standard, do not offer integrated OEM telematics or use machines without integrated telematics solutions. In addition, you may be dependent on the different agreements and guidelines of the individual manufacturers, which can be particularly restrictive for dynamic companies with growing fleets.

In other cases, a single telematics solution, similar to our IoT devices, can prove very beneficial, especially when coupled with its own customized software. Such a system involves some effort, as each telematics device has to be installed manually. However, our experts and service technicians will support you and your company right from the start.

What does this mean for me as a SAM or

Despite the advantages and disadvantages of the various options outlined above, as a user of our software solutions you can still choose between our own telematics devices, an external telematics solution from a third-party provider or an integrated AEMP 2.0-standardized OEM solution.
